Open Small Linux

Version 0.8  |  BuildRoot  |  opkg  |  x86-64

News

NEW! Version 0.8 released — the first public one.

NEW! The image now ships the osl-install installer and the osl-tools utility set. See the Handbook.

Quick facts

Base: BuildRoot
Platform: PC (x86-64)
Packages: opkg
Installer: osl-install (CLI)

Features

  • BuildRoot — the whole system is built from source.
  • Permissive software first — permissive licenses are preferred wherever possible.
  • Built-in opkg — the package manager is installed in every image and ready to use; the official feed is coming with the repository (in preparation).
  • For PCs — aimed at ordinary computers (BIOS/MBR and UEFI/GPT).
  • CLI installer — osl-install: formats the partition, copies the system, writes GRUB by hand. No grub-install needed.
  • Native tools — osl-sysinfo, osl-power, osl-net, written in C with no dependencies beyond libc.
# package management (the official feed is not configured in 0.8 yet,
# so `opkg update` will fail until the repository launches)
opkg install ./some-package.ipk # installing a local .ipk file

# once the repository exists:
opkg update
opkg install <package_name>
opkg remove <package_name>

# system tools
osl-sysinfo # system information
osl-net status # interfaces and routes
osl-power # reboot / poweroff menu

# install the system to a hard disk (as root)
osl-install
